GREEN LIGHT

Green Light.... now this one is so special to me. This is one of those songs that just comes straight from source itself. At first I saw the concept being really on the nose like getting the "green light" to make a move on someone you like. I looked up some R&B Chords and H.E.R. had a youtube video specifically about how she finds chords for her songs. I found C and F but in a positioning I've never really played it before. Back and forth I started playing them and next thing you know "I'm a shapeshifter...always tryna fit the mold" came out. The whole verse and chorus out in one sitting. I noticed the words in the first verse weren't about a romantic relationship, but reflecting on who I am as a person.

When I was younger, I very much tried to fit on the pedestal I was given and it wasn't until recently that I started setting boundaries. I started learning I could really be myself, say no, and not always have to be the strong one around the one's that truly accept me. And I started to let go of the ones who couldn't hold that space for me. I immediately made this connection to how it feels to "come out."

My biggest wish is for "coming out" to not even be a thing anymore. It's so much pressure, especially on a child, to have to make some sort of statement that just explains who you are. I remember the nervousness and fear, even, that I felt when I came out to my parents. And that's that I was lucky and they accepted it! This song has so many different meanings but the best one I think is me singing it to myself and giving myself the green light to be who I know I truly am. To not hide behind that mask and live freely as my whole, true, self. I hope it does the same for you.
