violet haze features dj laflaquita, who took a sample and turned it into something that hits different every single time. the original sample comes from a song called "leaping lesbians" — a parody that captured something real: the fear some people carry around people who are just trying to exist and love freely. laflaquita understood the assignment. she didn't just use the sample — she transformed it into a full celebration. a reclamation. proof that what was meant to mock us has always had the power to become our anthem.

✦Violet has the shortest wavelength of any visible color — it carries the most energy in the spectrum. it is, scientifically, the most powerful color the eye can see.

✦Violet is the last color in the rainbow and the first color that becomes invisible as light bends beyond human sight — it exists at the very edge of what we can perceive, pushing past every limit.

✦The LGBTQ+ pride flag was first created in 1978 by Gilbert Baker — he described the colors as a spectrum of life. violet, at the end, represented the spirit. it always has.

✍ what this song means to me

Violet Haze!!! What can I say about this song? SO MUCH!!!! The fact that it is EDM-based is mind-blowing to me because it is the complete opposite of the music I make. I am more of a laidback, sadboi, emotional type artist so doing this song was challenging but so much fun. I was watching a documentary on LGBTQ+ women in music and I heard about a song called "Leaping Lesbians" It was from 1977 by a woman named Sue Fink. I loved it. I loved the parody and I immediately thought I need to sample this song someday. The time came when I linked up with DJ LaFlaquita and the rest is HERstory.

We changed the chorus lyrics to claim our identity and turn it into more of a bravado style anthem, acknoledging the fact that we have always been here. Our people have stood the test of time and we know the fight is not over. It might never be.... but I wanted to turn this song into a celebration of love, joy as an act of resistance and call out the silliness of the judgemental people who still can't accept that LOVE IS LOVE. Even if it has nothing to do with you.

So hello there! And THANK YOU SO MUCH. You made it to the end. Whether you read every story or not, I hope the portals to my songs gave you an insight of how this album came together and how much I put into it. I mean I even made this old school coding website for it! LOL. Like I said, this was 3 years in the making all executed within 6 MONTHS. It's crazy to see the end. My first time really going all out with this and asking for help and collaborating as much as I did. It was an experience like no other. I encourage you to do the same.

Do that thing that everyone told you wouldn't work, that one idea that's been in the back of your mind but you were always held back by fear. This life is too short. I'm glad I learned that in my lifetimes and am applying it now. I can't thank you enough if you made it all the way here to the end. The support I get from my family and friends is already enough but the support I get from absolute strangers means the most! If that's you, welcome! And I hope we become closer.
